Notes for a critical history of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB)
Abstract
The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) is a multilateral agency that has been involved in inter-American relations and, therefore, in the regionalism, for more than 60 years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the IADB considering its origin, structure, theoretical and ideological assumptions, the institution's development, financing policies and projections; as well as to understand all these aspects linked with the dynamics of inter-American relations. To do this, the article first describes the Bank and exposes the analytical matrix on which it relies on, then presents a periodization in the history of the Bank and, finally, it provides a reflection on the general behavior of the IADB. Thus, the IDB is identified as a key institution in the external projection of the United States towards Latin America and the Caribbean.
